Originally associated with the south-western county of Cornwall in England, the savoury snack has found a popular niche in the Mexican audience that which has been epitomised by the opening of the Real del Monte "delicacy" exhibition.
Five bakers from the Mexican municipality learned the art of crimping the pastry whilst visiting Cornwall and have taken their skills back to their homeland ready for the museum's opening in March 2012.
Although the pasty has been in Mexico for generations, fillings are more likely to be peppers, chicken, pineapple and hot chilli sauce. The people there first experienced the pastry dish when football and technology were brought overseas by the Cornish miners in 1824.
Jaime Soto, the chairman who led the delegation, said: "Everyone we have met has been very interested in the history of the Cornish miners in our area and it has been a wonderful opportunity to spread the word over here."
According to the Cornish Pasty Association, a true pasty has a distinctive 'D' shape and is crimped on one side, never on top comma with a filling of mince, swede, potato and onion in a light peppered seasoning.
