Curriculum ‘does not provide youngsters with useable skills’

January 5, 2012

The current school curriculum is producing students without applicable skills that could be used in the real world.

This is according to one expert who  believes school-leavers do not have what employers are looking for and this is a crucial problem especially in today's job market.

Ian Harper, chief executive of ATG Training, said: "The potential is there but in a crowded curriculum, I don't think these young people are getting the work experience and the taste of being employed that they need."

He added that youth unemployment is a particular concern and that the current curriculum is producing large numbers of people who are not attractive to prospective employers – creating a cycle of further youngsters left without work.

School leavers without the best qualifications are often a risk employers do not want to take, according to Mr Harper.

In December, announcements were made to push back the proposed reforms of the national curriculum to 2014 to give the government more time to review changes.
