(This message was added in version 6.7.0.) in /var/www/annamckann.com/public/wp-includes/functions.php on line 6114Having had the horrible flu virus that everyone around me seems to have suffered in one form or another, I have spent most of the past week at home.
The week began with me wallowing in self-pity, but then I learnt to rest in my sickness and make the most of my time indoors. Yes, housebound for a week, I watched daytime TV, a rarity for me, discovered that it wasn’t all rubbish after all, well not quite! Then I progressed to lots of reading, some writing and plenty of contemplating. It’s hard to believe another year is nearly over, but hopefully we are all wiser and may be its time to think about all those things on the bucket list, yet to be accomplished as New Year looms ahead. Uhm! In my case it seems like those tasks are just going to get re labelled…carried forward, so to speak. Not to worry, there are things done which I never expected so all is not lost. Generally it was a good year and I am certainly feeling positive and relieved that health has been restored before the Christmas festivities. Now be back on full form I’m planning meals -yes I’m entertaining – and charging around buying gifts.
With three granddaughters to buy for and plenty of girlfriends it’s going to be fun, but I do wish I could curb the temptation to eat all those Christmas chocolates. Does everyone do that or just me? You know what I mean, eat all the chocolates and then have to buy more. The interesting thing is when I felt ill I had no appetite but still managed to devour tons of chocolate, not to mention mince pies and Christmas cake. Oh my gosh it’s not even Christmas yet!
So, perusing those tempting recipes and deciding what delights should be on offer on my table at Christmas Eve, I have discovered some rather simple but tasty canapés, quick to prepare but very tempting. Stilton and pear toasties, a Moorish combination of sweet and savoury, and devilled eggs are top of my list, whilst Scottish salmon with cranberry and apricot stuffing, honey and citrus glazed sounds delicious.
How blessed are we? Now you know what I’m going to say next. Yes, thinking of all those kids who will be lucky if they even have a bowl of rice this Christmas. What went wrong? It was never meant to be like this was it?
So whatever you do this Christmas, please do something special for someone needy and less fortunate. Meanwhile, enjoy your family time.
