School Hols.

July 10, 2014

Well it’s that time of year again and as promised I will be taking my little granddaughter somewhere for a holiday, as I have done each year since she was three years old, she’s now fast approaching nine. It’s always a hoot, great fun but quite exhausting, and I’m just wondering what’s going to happen when the new little granddaughter gets a little older. Oh my gosh, I will never cope with two!

These school holidays create such problems and whilst the teachers may welcome them they are a headache for parents trying to juggle child care, not to mention that the kids get bored after a couple of weeks. Yes they do!

It seems such a long time since I did any school visits though I have done more than my fair share in the past. That said, I have just agreed to do a few in the autumn term including some in Spain. I just took a quick look at the curriculum and school timetable and couldn’t believe it. Eleven weeks, vacation in some parts. How crazy is that? More to the point how do they learn anything? They’re never in school! O.K exaggeration! So what to do in the school hols? How about some jobs and earn a little pocket money kids? Good idea! Or are you one of those parents who have to pay for a holiday club? Nightmare!

Does my daughter realise how lucky she is? Two weeks of the school holiday problem solved; on vacation with Nanny. Uhm! Actually I’m the lucky one, it’s such fun and I’m so glad that I have last year’s blogs to look over. I would never have remembered all those hilarious moments, especially the snake in the pool and the party scene, quote…

“Nanny, what are you taking all those things for? This is a holiday and you’re not supposed to work on holiday are you?”

“Well I will do some work when you are in bed at night.”

“Nanny, are you crazy?” We will be partying every night and you will be too tired to work. It’s a holiday, remember!”

And, when I asked her to stop splashing because I didn’t like too much water in my face,-

“ Nanny, if I was drowning would you rescue me or would you not want water in your face?”

Moving on, she thought it was hilarious when I asked her to get out of the pool for a while until I had caught the grass snake which seemed to be hovering on the bottom. Although not a common occurrence we have been known to have them on the land and in the pool, bearing in mind we are visiting rural Spain.

Whilst I spent a few moments wondering which the head was and which the tail, as all I could make out was its patterned body lying there, and I wasn’t happy I might add. She began to giggle, passed me her pink fishing net and exclaimed.

“Nanny it’s not a snake it’s the ribbon I had in my hair yesterday.”

What a relief! But then the neighbours had found one in their pool the week before so it could have been a reality.

So I’m left reading my August 2013 blogs with a smile and once again looking forward to forthcoming adventures. Till then more work to do. #amwriting
