The Loom band saga
Having spent lots of time with my nearly nine year old granddaughter during the summer holidays – yes I’m told, quote… ‘nearly nine nanny, not eight,’ uhm words make all the difference! – I seem to have been caught up in this loom band mania. What parent or grandparent hasn’t I wonder? And I wish I’d had the idea for the flipping things. Ingenious! That said, I have just read a very interesting article and here goes;-
Millions of the colourful elastic bands are being sold throughout the world but what happens to them when they are no longer wanted or the craze dies down?
Uhm! Apparently experts have warned that they are made from a type of silicone which does not break down or disintegrate naturally. Hence as large numbers are thrown away they could pose a problem for the environment. Another concern is that discarded bands could be dangerous if they are swallowed by pets or even by marine life if they end up in the sea.
S-o-o-o, experts have said that if the loom band craze continues to grow schemes may need to be put in place to get rid of the bands safely.
What next? Please don’t tell me we’re going to have another wheelie bin, ho ho!
