Are you one of those people who are thinking where did the years go? It doesn’t seem long since the millennium celebrations and here we are, fifteen years on. So bucket list made, looking forward to the new year and hoping everyone reading this blog has a great year too.
As for me I heralded in the New Year with the Spanish and it brought back memories of many years ago when I spent the celebrations in Mexico City. Makes a change as I’m usually Yorkshire based at this time of year.
So what can I say other than the fact that the Spanish know how to party.
Been there, done that, I wasn’t in the mood for lots of kids and the Gala Dinner which began with drinks at about 8.15 pm, and went through till the early hours was well attended by kids. Even one or two babes in pushchairs. Whaaaat! It’s a Spanish thing. They don’t get sitters like us Brits, they are very family orientated and the children go with them.
Shame Maddie McCann’s parents didn’t do that!
Hum!
Well at about 11.30, at which point all these youngsters were just coming to life and trooping onto the dance floor, as if by a flurry of magic dust all the adults suddenly turned into kids too. Yes, it was the effect of the huge silver foil party bags handed to everyone which brought about the transformation. Me included! What wasn’t in that bag? Hats, silly string, streamers, an array of whistles and party blowers plus a bag of tiny coloured balls and something which looked like a pea shooter. Takes me back to my childhood days. Well it wasn’t a pea shooter but a new year ball shooter! It took some effort after a few glasses of vino, so I just threw mine managing some good hits I hasten to add, which led me into a fit of giggles as no one knew where they had come from. One poor dude nearly swallowed his as it landed neatly in his pile of grapes.
With 380 people all going bananas suddenly, it was difficult to recognise who the children were. Then countdown and midnight. I have never eaten a bunch of grapes so fast. Twelve grapes, one swallowed on each chime of the clock at midnight. I had to shovel the last few in. Obviously I’m not practiced in such an art. I don’t think it really matters and I swallowed them all eventually and, as tradition predicts, I’m now gonna have a prosperous year.
How you measure prosperity well I’m sure, that depends on your train of thought.
So, with new things in mind I’m just about to head back to Yorkshire and looking forward to a prosperous 2015.
Be blessed everyone.
