Yorkshire Awards

November 13, 2012

What a fabulous evening and once again I am proud to be a Yorkshire lass. I was invited to the awards ceremony hosted on Friday 9th November at the Hilton Hotel, Leeds. All awards were of course well deserved but I was pleased to meet Sam Oldroyd from Jade, who actually sat on our table and told us in detail about his work with young people, needless to say he won a much deserved award.  Quote, ‘Over the years, the group has seen significant falls in crime rates among the communities in which it works, along with dramatically increased aspirations and opportunities for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.’

And I intend to visit his projects in the near future, that’s for sure. Yes I will make time!

I was more than thrilled to meet some of our Olympians and we all know about the huge success of our Yorkshire athletes. For my part the two people that I most wanted to meet were Nicola Adams – who should have been there but was sadly taken sick at the last moment and, Hannah Cockroft, the British wheelchair champion who won both the 100 and 200 metres. Well guess what?  I had a lengthy conversation with the delightful Hannah and I am now the proud owner of a photo taken with her and her two stunning gold medals. And they are heavy! Hannah is such a nice person, a real Yorkie with a great sense of humour. I will certainly be one of her number one followers in the future. What an inspiration to us all. May she go on and win many more medals including another gold in Brazil.

Hannah I will be cheering you on.

Of course Sebastian Coe took the Yorkshire Man of the Year award and my only disappointment was that he was not there in person to collect it.

Then there was the young soldier who’s tremendous act of bravery saved the life of one of her colleagues. All in the act of duty perhaps! She wondered what all the fuss was about but we were all in awe.

These people put us to shame and it poses the question what are we doing with our lives. We need to do more.
