Calderon tipped to lose presidential election

July 5, 2011

Mexico's leader is unlikely to win the presidential election in 2012, an analyst has stated.

Alejandro Schtulmann, research director of Emerging Markets Political Risk Analysis, told Bloomberg that Felipe Calderon has become the "big loser" from the recent vote in Mexico State.

Indeed, his National Action Party secured just 12 per cent of the popular vote, while the Institutional Revolutionary Party achieved a 63 per cent share.

Mr Schtulmann believes this bodes badly for Mr Calderon's hopes at the polls next year.

"He had years to prepare the ideal candidate in Mexico State and he couldn't do it," he commented.

"The same thing could happen in 2012."

Mr Calderon's party was also beaten at the ballot box by the Revolutionary Democratic Party, which secured more than one-fifth of the votes.

This comes after Carlos Ramirez, an expert at the Eurasia Group, told Reuters this represents a positive step forwards for both the Institutional Revolutionary Party and its leader Enrique Pena Nieto.
