US aims to support Central America in tackling violence

June 24, 2011

Central American countries such as Mexico are to receive greater support from the US as part of an effort to curb ongoing violence in the region.

According to Hillary Clinton, the US secretary of state, countries in the area need to focus on directly attacking criminal groups, strengthening the rule of law and tackling corruption.

She stated that the region also needs "accountable and effective institutions", before saying measures to stop young people getting involved in crime must be put in place.

Mrs Clinton said there is an "acute and growing concern over the violence and criminality affecting our friends and neighbours in Central America".

She went on to reiterate Barack Obama's assurances earlier this year that the US would engage with its partners in the region to make its citizens more secure.

The pledge comes shortly after BBC News reported that Mexican president Felipe Calderon has welcomed the capture of Jose de Jesus Mendez Vargus, the leader of drug cartel La Familia.
