Clinton ‘concerned’ about violence in central America

June 22, 2011

An aide of the US secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, has explained that the politician will join forces with central America after becoming concerned about the drugs war taking place in the region.

Arturo Valenzuela, the assistant secretary of state for Western Hemisphere affairs, told AFP that Clinton is looking to increase United States engagement in the issue of drug trafficking and will visit Guatemala tommorow (June 23rd).

Mr Valenzuela said that the secretary of state has been "been concerned about the situation in central America for some time" and stated that the meeting will discuss how funding can be used in the most effective way to tackle narcotics-related violence.

The leaders of Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama are also set to be present at the meeting.

This comes after the BBC recently reported that Mexican poet Javier Sicilia has accused the US of failing to handle the drugs war, stating that it shares a "grave responsibility" for the violence.
