Poet praised for drug war protests

June 20, 2011

The organiser of a major demonstration against drug-related violence in Mexico has been commended by a Monterrey-based doctor.

Pedro Enriquez attended Javier Sicilia's speech in the city when a peace caravan organised by the famous poet visited the region, Reuters reports.

Enriquez came away impressed with what he heard and commended Sicilia for "giving people hope that something can be done about this".

The poet himself said he believes now is the time to unite for the sake of Mexico.

"We have to give the violence a face because 40,000 victims is terrible," Sicilia commented.

He has been personally affected by Mexico's drug war, as his son was shot dead earlier this year.

Reuters understands that following the recent peace caravan in the north of the country, a similar demonstration will be staged in southern towns and cities.

This comes after Erika Verastegui Escobedo, a participant in the protests, told BBC News they have given people the opportunity to express their pain.
