Research suggests child literacy can be boosted by Simon Says games

July 20, 2011

A new study has demonstrated that children's early years literacy development could be aided by Simon Says-style games involving self-regulation.

The research was recently published in Psychological Assessment and looked at more than 800 youngsters in four countries between the ages of three and six years.

Megan McClelland, associate professor of human development and family science at Oregon State University, worked alongside lead author Shannon Wanless of the University of Pittsburgh for the project.

Ms McClelland is an expert on self-regulation, which is the process by which children listen, follow a task and remember the instructions.

"Beyond demographic variables or teacher's expectations, we found that the children in all the countries who performed well on the task did significantly better in math, vocabulary and early literacy," she said.

This week, the Summer Reading Challenge kicked off in the UK, aimed at encouraging more kids to visit their local library and enjoy the books there.
