Boris Johnson highlights child literacy efforts in London

July 21, 2011

London Mayor Boris Johnson has described how proud he is of the number of people volunteering in the capital to initiatives such as child literacy programmes.

In an interview with London 24, the politician noted that 500 volunteers are being recruited to teach young people how to read and write, but this is only one part of what Team London is doing.

The project, which aims to promote volunteering to even more people, has £2.5 million of funding from the mayor's office and a further £2 million from the Reuben Foundation.

Mr Johnson explained that the activities included in the scheme range from tree planting and sports teams to mentoring and uniformed groups such as the Scouts and Guides.

"London is already a city of good will. We have a proud tradition of giving something back with three quarters of Londoners volunteering in some capacity each year," he added.

One celebrity who has been involved heavily in child literacy projects is veteran singer Dolly Parton, whose Imagination Library project is in place in Rotherham.
