Mexican police force resigns

August 5, 2011

The town of Ascension in the Mexican state of Chihuahua has been thrown into disarray after all 26 officers in the police force resigned.

BBC News reported Mayor Jamie Dominguez Loya as saying: "The officers were afraid and resigned."

The police force was prompted to hand in their notice after two of their colleagues were killed by suspected drug traffickers, with the remaining cops concerned that they may be next.

Chihuahua is one of the worst states in Mexico in terms of drug-related violence and state police and army officers have been called into control the town of Ascencion until a long-term solution is found.

The death of the two police officers was not the first time the emergency services have had to face such an incident this year, with police chief Manuel Martinez – who had been in his role for just seven months – gunned down with two other cops in mid-May, reported the Associated Press.
