Eastbourne children offered literacy boost

August 9, 2011

Children in Eastbourne have benefitted from a boost to their literacy, maths and general learning through the creation of a new specialist training centre.

It is based at Highfield Junior School in The Hydneye and has helped more than 250 youngsters to improve their spelling and reading over recent months as part of the Every Child a Reader project, the Eastbourne Herald reports.

Councillor Nick Bennett, the council's lead member for learning and school effectiveness, said: "This centre is doing marvellous things for those children who have difficulties in the early stages of their education."

Meanwhile, independent thinktank CentreForum recently advised parents on the best ways to improve the literacy of their children.

It recommended sitting down with them on a daily basis and simply reading with them; parents should also offer praise whenever they can as this will help to build their child's confidence.

Families should also spend at least 20 minutes of the day simply conversing without the distractions of the TV.
