According to Nansi Ellis, head of education policy at ATL, the education union, children are the future of business in the UK and they need to be given the right skills to succeed.
"Some will study beyond 16, but all pupils must have the opportunity to learn to function mathematically in the 21st Century rather than learning to be mathematical 'failures'," she commented.
Ms Ellis argued that it is important for every pupil to have a strong grasp of the basic skills in maths and reading in order to get on later in life.
A charity drive is helping to raise the confidence of children at Lady Hastings Primary School in Collingham, with a sponsored reading scheme having been set up.
Local publication the Wetherby News reported the fundraising event is helping to provide funds for new classrooms.
