Grants announced to boost literacy in young Mexicans

September 22, 2011

Tens of thousands of dollars in grants have been awarded to a scheme that aims to boost literacy levels among young Mexicans.

The Institute of Mexicans Abroad is contributing $50,000 (£32,000) to a fund that will donate $2,000 scholarships to 50 students at the University of New Mexico.

It is hoped that the programme will improve higher education opportunities for Mexican immigrants and students living in the US who come from Mexican families.

As part of the initiative, a further $10,000 has been awarded to the Central New Mexico Community College and another $10,000 to the community-based organisation Plaza de Encuentro.

Mauricio Ibarra Ponce de Leon, consul of Mexico in Albuquerque, said: "The Consulate of Mexico is achieving one of its priorities in terms of directly supporting the educational needs of Mexican and Mexican-American students."

According to Unicef, the literacy rate in Mexico among 15 to 24-year-olds stood at 98 per cent between 2004 and 2008.
