Paris to stage ‘world’s first mariachi opera’

September 23, 2011

Cruzar la Cara de la Luna, described as the world's first mariachi opera, is set to open in Paris this evening (September 23rd).

Performed by the Houston Grand Opera (HGO), the show will commence a brief stint at the Theatre du Chatelet at 20:00 local time, with the run due to extend until Tuesday September 27th.

Jose Pepe Martinez was commissioned by the HGO to create the mariachi opera, having previously acted as music director for the Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan ensemble.

Cecilia Duarte, the HGO's cast mezzo-soprano, will appear in the production alongside baritone and HGO alumnus Octavio Moreno.

The likes of Brian Shircliffe, Brittany Wheeler, Vanessa Cerda-Alonzo and David Guzman also star in Cruzar la Cara de la Luna, which translates as To Cross the Face of the Moon.

General director Anthony Freud commented: "Opera arias and mariachi songs tell human stories of love and loss, family and country; through music they aim their narratives straight at the heart."
