Mexican police earning below average wages, report finds

September 26, 2011

Many Mexican police officers get paid lower-than-average wages despite the work that they do in keeping the streets safe, a report has revealed.

Police officers still earn about $670 per month (£431) for state police, reports the Associated Press.

Reportedly, the worst hit area for low wages is Tamaulipas, where the officers earn less than $200 a month.

The report urged lagging states to raise police wages as low salaries have been cited as one cause of police corruption.

Federal police officers usually earn the most out of all the ranking divisions, often earning up to $870 per month.

Federal Police division was created as the Federal Preventive Police in 1998 by the initiative of President Ernesto Zedillo to prevent and combat crime throughout Mexico.

The division aims to maintain and strengthen the social communications strategy and media relations by working with the people and keeping communities safe.
