Mexican snacks win best street food in New York

September 27, 2011

A Mexican food vendor who works on the streets of New York has been named as the best fast food outlet in the city.

The seventh annual Vendy awards attracted 1,700 attendees when it took place half a mile south of Manhattan on Governors Island and the competition to see whose food was best came to a glorious end for the Mexican retailer.

Brooklyn-based Salvadorians Rafael Soler and Reina Bermudez-Soler, who own Solber Pupusas, walked away with the prize for the best food.

The take-out serves a Central American speciality called a pupusa, which is made from corn patties stuffed with meats, cheeses and vegetables. The portable dish is often paired with sweet plantains, pickled onions, cabbage and jalapenos, as well as some sauces.

New York is famed for its street vendors but it was not until recently that other foods apart from pretzels and hotdogs were available. The demand for different types of food has led to schnitzel, grilled cheese and Korean-Mexican infusion trucks springing up.

Mexican food favourites in the UK include fajitas, chili con carne and chicken quesadillas.
