The interior ministry said that four women and 34 men were left by the smugglers in two remote locations eight and 15 miles from the border city of Nogales, Mexico, the Associated Press reports.
According to statements from the people trying to get into America through the highly guarded US border, the group got lost while illegally crossing into the US and were left wandering around the desert for days.
One of the immigrants was hospitalised due to dehydration, but others were fine and returned to Mexico by border officials.
It is estimated that there are 11 million illegal immigrants living in America.
The New York Times reports that migrant shelters along the Mexican border are filled with seasoned crossers such as older men and women, often deportees trying to get back into the US where their immigrant family have grown up.
