Newspaper wins award for literacy campaign

October 12, 2011

The London Evening Standard's Get London Reading initiative has won an award, highlighting the importance of literacy.

Through its work with schools and organisations to encourage children to enjoy the pastime of a good book, the newspaper has made a huge effort to increase the amount of children who are able to read when they leave primary school.

Current figures show that one in four children leave school without sufficient literacy skills.

Described as an inspirational contribution to the promotion of literacy and creative writing by the Brit Writers' Awards, the Evening Standard's campaign fought off 40 other nominees to get a place in the final four.

The newspaper won the People's Prize for Literacy Development, which was presented at Madame Tussaud's.

Judges on the panel said: "Of all the literacy projects and campaigns we considered, we felt that the Evening Standard's campaign has had the highest impact and has been most effective in achieving the aim of getting people into reading and writing."
