The storm hit the country on Wednesday (October 12th) killing at least five people and injuring six.
A total of 2,600 people in flood-prone areas hit by Jova were evacuated by Mexico's navy and set up kitchens at shelters to feed 1,600 evacuees.
Across the border in Guatemala, a tropical force unleashed steady rains that caused 13 deaths.
Jova hit west of the Mexican port of Manzanillo and the beach town of Barra de Navidad at speeds of 100mph winds and heavy rain.
Amongst the fatalities are a 71-year-old woman who was swept away in the strong currents and a 21-year-old woman and her daughter, Jalisco civil protection officials reported.
The tropical storm was said to be a Category 3 hurricane, which are described as major hurricanes in the Atlantic or eastern Pacific basins.
National Hurricane Center forecasts show that there is a 20 per cent chance of a cyclone forming over the north Atlantic, Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico.
