Child literacy seminar urges teachers to plan lessons ‘strategically’

July 28, 2011

Teachers have been encouraged to prepare their lessons in such a way that children can always get on with learning even when their tutor is busy.

This was the message from literacy expert Margo Southall, who led a three-day event giving such education professionals tips on how to get the best from youngsters, reported the Record.

"Right from the first day of school, you need to plan strategically," she explained, adding that teachers should aim to make their classrooms "literacy centres".

The publication reported that 45 teaching professionals attended the course and were advised to create areas that children can go to find something new to enjoy without needing to ask their tutor for guidance.

For example, creating a list of questions relating to a book found in the room.

In London, New Zealander Dianne Murphy has enjoyed a great deal of success by undertaking one-on-one sessions with teenagers with very low reading ages, according to the Daily Telegraph.
