Children are ‘not meeting basic exam standards’

November 4, 2011

Schoolchildren struggle in basic academic exams, according to a new report.

The Scottish Qualification Authority found that many pupils who sat the standard grade and higher exams this year did not meet the required level of basic spelling and grammar as well as facing difficulty with understanding instructions, BBC News reports.

Although the Scottish government said literacy was improving, the worry surrounding the basic skills of youngsters is something that needs to be addressed.

Hazel Kinnear, depute head teacher of Drummond Community High School in Edinburgh, said: "By the time young people come to secondary school, if the foundations are not there it becomes very difficult to access their subjects across the curriculum."

She added that a drive towards improving the skills of children before they get to secondary school is important.

Figures released by the Programme for International Student Assessment showed that Britain is behind in education standards and that China and Hong Kong are the top countries.
