Countdown or meltdown…not sure which!

31 October 2011 12:00AM

This blog was meant to go on the website a couple of days before the Chavos ball and didn’t happen. With only a few hours to go my phone was constantly ringing with giddy people who just couldn’t wait for the ball.
Girls, girls, girls, just planning that special little number; the ball gown of course, not to mention new shoes, dolly bags, hair accessories, spray tans and more.
Then the guys who had said they were fed up of the rigger boots, jeans and uniforms and were actually looking forward to dusting off that dinner suit and sweeping the ladies off their feet.           Recently I had a quick meeting with the Lady Mayor of Wakefield who agreed to officially open the ball, even though the event was being held in Leeds. I was born and bred in the Wakefield district and my business has traded there for 24 years, so that sort of makes me a Wakey lass even though I have moved around the country in my younger days. Yes that makes me sound old doesn’t it but who cares what it says on the birth certificate. Age is a state of mind and some days I feel 35, others 110. Uhm! More often these days the latter.

So, I thought of all the girls who had been dashing around getting their nails done and spray tans? Whatever did we do before gel nails I wonder? As for me, I was dashing around making all those final adjustments and checking out dancers, musicians and florists.

So now it’s all over and I am on meltdown. Exhausted but exhilarated. Thinking of all those things that didn’t go quite according to plan, though I think only I noticed and I’m already planning the next one.

I am so privileged to have had such special guests which included – The Mexican Ambassador, His Excellency Eduardo Medina-Mora, The Lord Mayor of Leeds, Reverend Councillor Alan Taylor, The Right Worshipful The Mayor of the city of Wakefield Councillor Ros Lund and Consort Councillor Robert Appleyard and many more.
Performances by The Rory Ingham Quartet, The UK’s leading mariachi band – Mariachi Mexteca, The WYSPA Street Dancers and the soprano Suzi Saperia were fabulous.

Just need to tell you the funny little story about my 5 year old granddaughter, who was delighted when I told her that I was going to a ball but devastated when she found out she wasn’t invited. She then went on to admire my dress and whilst she thought it was the type of dress one of the Disney princesses would wear, she pondered and said “Nanny, do you think you’re too old to be a princess?” Aaaaawwwwww! Then seeing the disappointment on my face she came back and reiterated “Don’t worry nanny, it’s what’s inside that counts.” Through the mouths of babes!

So thank you to all those people who helped to make this a special occasion and to Lupitas for providing the salsa dips. Thanks to all those who voluntarily gave their time and helped with pre ball arrangements and clearing after the event.
I hope The WYSPA Street Dancers were successful as they auditioned for Britain’s Got Talent on Sunday afternoon.

I’m now planning to catch up with some paper work, do a little writing and looking forward to visiting some London schools next week.

I will post some pictures on my facebook fan page soon.
