Daily Mirror launches new literacy campaign

January 16, 2012

A new campaign has been launched to encourage children and adults to enjoy reading.

Named We Love Reading, the scheme from the Daily Mirror aims to highlight the possibilities that reading can bring to everyone.

The newspaper revealed that its initiative will run through 2012 and that it has already won the support of writers and politicians, as well as poet laureate Carol Ann Duffy.

Commenting on the unveiling of the reading scheme, chief executive of charity The Reading Agency Miranda McKearney said: "Reading is extremely important, from the sheer joy and inspiration of it to increasingly in all sorts of areas of work. Plus reading can be stress-busting and even prevent the onset of dementia."

She added that it is great to see the Mirror getting behind reading as it is one of life's most brilliant pastimes.

The publication is following in the footsteps of the London Evening Standard's Get London Reading campaign, which last year gained European recognition for its work to improve literacy levels in deprived areas of the city.
