.
All too often we sleep and miss the best things in life. This morning I woke in the beautiful English countryside at the home of friends near Stoke on Trent. Yes there are some beautiful little villages not to mention pubs and restaurants that serve the finest of food around Stoke. A visit to these friends is always a blessing but this morning was something quite different. I planned to leave early to avoid the traffic, what I didn’t plan to do was to leave at 4am.
Window open, fresh clean country air, I woke to the beautiful chorus of the local bird council. Sitting and pondering before I left I realised there is nothing like the early morning sing-a-long of the birds, to make one value and appreciate life.
Suddenly feeling creative, is this the best time of the day, I perused? Then, perhaps this only works in summer when waking to the beautiful vibrant sunny mornings. Rather than drive the two hours to my home in Yorkshire I felt inspired, alive and full of ideas. I wanted to write.
Then I started thinking about this latest craze, ‘mindfulness.’ Isn’t this just what we believers do though – we call it prayer? Are people using it as a substitute to prayer? Our society is certainly more Godless. Especially since they took God out of the schools. Our children don’t have a clue if you mention Moses, Joseph, Samson or Delilah. I just love all those Bible stories.
Anyway, have you ever heard the scripture, ‘be still and know that I am God?’ What that conjures up to me is mindfulness. Calm, tranquillity, meditation and listening. We all need more of that in the busy merry go round of life.
So what’s the ultimate message in all of this? Well it’s now 9am and I feel invigorated. The day is just beginning for some and I’ve achieved so much already. Not to mention a fabulous hassle free drive to Yorkshire and a long walk with the dogs.
For now at least I need to change my routine. Early to bed and early to rise.
Enjoy creation. More early morning walks with my little dogs. And, make the most of those waking moments.
Happy days
Anna
