Funding to help provide more teachers in Glasgow

August 31, 2011

A new round of government funding has delivered an extra £500,000 for schools in Glasgow to take on extra teachers.

26 of the 30 secondary level institutions in the city will each receive an additional teacher to help to drive up educational standards over the coming months.

The scheme is being used as a pilot to see whether offering greater support to students and their current tutors will be a worthwhile investment, but if results do go up then further funding could be made available in the future.

Council leader Gordon Matheson said: "Personally and politically, education is a key priority for this administration and we have decided to recruit an additional 26 teachers for secondaries with the sole remit of raising attainment."

Elsewhere, children in Bristol are being given the chance to improve their communication and reading skills as part of the new 'Get Your Cheeky Monkeys Chatting' initiative.

Speech and language therapist for North Bristol NHS Trust Sarah Rowles has developed the Wow! Gorilla guide and this is being used to help parents communicate with their kids.
