The West Cumbria Dyslexia Association will be setting up morning classes on Saturdays, with the help of experienced specialist teachers designed for four children at a time, the News and Star reports.
Although parents will have to cover the teaching costs, the charity says the provision should help to fill the gap left by service cuts, which has left just one teacher allocated to the entire county for one day a week to help those with literacy needs.
"Instead of giving up we decided to set up classes, first for children on a Saturday morning, and then we hope for adults on a weekday evening," explained the charity's treasurer Anne McKenzie.
She added that due to austerity measures, many dyslexic children are placed into classes with slow learners even if they themselves are bright and able to deduce the nature of the task before them.
On Thursday (September 8th), UNESCO celebrated World Literacy Day, which aimed to highlight the humanitarian connections of increased literacy and global peace.
