For legal reasons, not many details about the child can be released, but it is known that he was born in San Diego and brought up by his grandmother in Mexico.
The Associated Press reported that the trial began on Monday (July 18th) and Edgar could face up to five years in jail if he is convicted of murder and other charges levelled at him.
According to the prosecution, the child confessed to killing four people whose decapitated bodies appeared in Mexico City at the end of 2010.
A recent report in the Mexican newspaper Reforma cited a study by Network for the Rights of Children showing 1,300 minors have lost their lives in Mexico's drug wars since December 2006, with a representative from the non-governmental organisation claiming the figure is rising more rapidly.
