Mexican troops ‘persecuting families’

June 15, 2011

A Mexican woman has accused the country's military of mistreating and singling out her family.

Olga Reyes, who lives in Ciudad Juarez, told BBC News that troops frequently go into private properties and "take away what they like".

She revealed that when her sister starting complaining about this to the authorities, her family started to be on the receiving end of "persecution".

A number of Ms Reyes's relatives have since been killed, although she claimed no investigation into the deaths has yet been carried out.

As a result, she has joined the Mexican peace caravan organised by poet Javier Sicilia – a major protest against the government's approach to ongoing drug-related violence.

"I want to keep on fighting so that those responsible for my family's deaths will be brought to justice," Ms Reyes commented.

She added that people in Mexico must put their fears to one side in order to go out and protest.

This comes after Mexican president Felipe Calderon insisted that government must continue with its current strategy to tackle drug-related violence, or risk further kidnappings, robberies and killings across the country.
