Mexican wrestler arrested on kidnapping charge

January 11, 2012

A renowned Mexican wrestler has been arrested on suspicion of being involved in a kidnapping and affiliations with cartels.

Estrella Dorada, who goes by the names of Lazaro Gurrola and Camilo Gurrola, was allegedly involved in the abduction of a casino employee in Monterrey with two other suspects arrested in May 2011, the Latin American Herald Tribune reports.

The attorney general's office said that Dorada, 26, regularly wrestled in Monterrey, one of Mexico's largest industrial cities.

Dorada was arrested on charges of kidnapping, criminal conspiracy and armed robbery, the statement added.

Fellow wrestler Jose Alberto Loera Rodriguez is also under arrest for his alleged involvement in a fire at Monterrey's Casino Royale. The incident is believed to be in connection with the Zetas cartel, who were allegedly seeking revenge after the owner of the gaming house refused to pay protection money.

Former leading figure in Mexico's drug cartels Benjamin Arellano Felix recently pleaded guilty to charges of racketeering and conspiracy to launder money in a US court.
