Friday turned out to be an informative day as I visited a home for children awaiting adoption, which interestingly was one of the first places that I visited in Mexico City in 2003, and one of its founders subsequently became a great friend.
OK, a couple of hours later having chatted with one of the Directors of the Institution, I left updated on the situation – in part – of Mexico’s street children. This is of course just the beginning of my research which will unfold over the next few days. It will also be interesting to see what happens next week with the Mexican elections as I have just been informed that some of my meetings are likely to be interrupted because Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has organised demonstrations, which are expected to be attended by thousands. I thought he promised to behave himself this time! I dread to think what will happen if he loses again if his behaviour of the 2006 elections is anything to go by.
Dodging around the city with my chauffeur – a great Mexican girl who had agreed to drive me around – I had forgotten what an awesome city of contrasts Mexico City really was. As we drove through Polanco, Reforma, Chapultec and Lomas, I was captivated by the pretty tree lined avenues, the magnificent colonial buildings and some of the wealth that oozed from the designer stores. We came to a halt outside ‘Autos Blindados,’ a garage selling vehicles with bullet proof glass, waited in traffic for a few moments then moved on. This all seemed a far cry from some of the areas that I expect to be visiting in the next few days.
Later a reunion with Mexican friends at EL Farolito tacos bar, turned out to be awesome and there’s no mistaking where our partners, Lupita UK got their excellent recipes from.
