New initiative helping kids in Bristol to read, write and communicate

August 18, 2011

The new 'Get Your Cheeky Monkeys Chatting' initiative in Bristol will help to boost the confidence of young people in order to improve their communication and reading and writing skills.

Speech and language therapist for North Bristol NHS Trust Sarah Rowles developed the Wow! Gorilla guide and this is being used to help parents communicate with their kids.

It encourages young ones to explore what it is that gorillas get up to and to voice these ideas in order to boost their ability to communicate.

Her colleague Elaine Watson said: "It is so important for parents to take an active part in developing their children's communication skills."

Ms Watson added that more than one million children across the UK currently have issues with their literacy and communication skills.

Meanwhile, Dianne Murphy is encouraging children in London to improve their reading by employing new teaching methods, incorporating direct instruction and positive reinforcement, the Telegraph recently reported.
