Peace caravan ‘helps drug war victims express pain’

June 14, 2011

One of the members of this week's peace caravan has said the anti-drug war demonstration has given people the opportunity to express their pain.

Erika Verastegui Escobedo told BBC News that since his 52-year-old father and 19-year-old brother disappeared two years ago, he has felt very alone.

However, he has found many people who have endured similar traumas throughout the march, and is therefore keen to see even more citizens join the caravan and air their views.

"There are many cases of people who have disappeared but people don't believe it," Mr Escobedo commented.

He insisted that this type of event is necessary, as it could help to stop others from denying these incidents are taking place.

Mr Escobedo revealed that when he reported the disappearance of his father and brother in 2009, he was ignored and later threatened by the police.

The peace caravan this week reached the US, a country which organiser Javier Sicilia accused of having a "grave responsibility" for Mexico's drug wars.
