A physical literacy test in schools has been suggested by experts at a recent conference in London. They stated that a mandatory test of fitness would improve the future generations of sporting professionals as well as better the health of youngsters.
Writing for the BBC's Scrubbing Up column, sports medicine specialist Dr Andy Franklyn-Miller said that higher levels of literacy in physical education (PE) would encourage a healthy lifestyle.
He added: "Let it be competitive and let us test our children against each other and identify those who need support from the network of physicians trained in sport and exercise medicine."
Create Potential, an online platform for education in sport, suggested that educating primary school children in sport and PE is essential to maximise their future potential.
Mr Franklyn-Miller's comments came as the Youth Sport Trust claimed it will train thousands of primary school teachers in specialist PE skills.
