Police find drug tunnel linking US to Mexico

November 18, 2011

Police in the US have found a large drug trafficking tunnel linking the country to Mexico in a discovery that could significantly impact the trade of drugs.

A 1,200 space ft hidden passage snaking under the highly-protected border was found between a warehouse in San Diego, California and the border city of Tijuana.

The officials were led to the tunnel when they stopped a truck leaving the warehouse containing three tons of marijuana.

In total more than 17 tons of the illegal drug was seized, a significantly large supply that will damage the trade of drug cartels behind the covert operation.

Mexican police reportedly retrieved more than six tons at the opposite end of the tunnel.

Police said the passageway was well equipped for travelling through with structural supports, electricity and ventilation.

Tijuana is the main gateway for drugs imported into the US via California.

Raids last November on two tunnels linking San Diego and Tijuana resulted in a combined 45.3 tons of marijuana on both sides of the border being seized.
