Following commendation from European commissioner for education Androulla Vassiliou earlier this month, the initiative – which sets out to encourage more youngsters to read in school dash has been praised by Princess Laurentien of the Netherlands, chairwoman of the High Level Group.
The princess told the London Evening Standard of how she wants to use the template of the scheme to create a similar one in European countries "to start to eradicate illiteracy in cities across Europe".
In an interview in Brussels, she said: "I have never seen a newspaper lead on literacy in this way. You are not just a reporter of the news, but also an advocate for change."
She commented that this is a "groundbreaking" initiative which could be used as a springboard in EU education standards.
The campaign aims to reduce the amount of schoolchildren leaving education without a high standard of reading ability, but also wants to encourage all ages to enjoy reading as a beneficial hobby.
