Puerto Morelos, a small town so quiet, it has been given the nickname "deads-ville", serves fresh produce from the local markets and fisherman, and is a stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of the tourist spot of Cancun, said Tom Castrigno, a travel and food reviewer writing for the Summit County Citizen's Voice.
According to Mr Castrigno, who is known as The Mobile Chef in his hometown of Frisco, Colerado, restaurants around the town serve classic Mexican cuisine including a lot of fresh fish.
A dish of El Pirata is one of its daily staples. This includes a menu of various meat, fish and vegetable tapas selections.
But as the fishing village is located on a national marine park and is part of a protected area, fishing has been scaled back and the limited tastes of the fresh seafood is of high quality.
He said: "We found seafood like we had never had before, full of complex flavours that were incredibly light and fresh."
ABC News reported that mexican restaurants are amongst the most popular choices for those eating out, according to top chefs in America and recipes have become popular around the world.
