The number of pupils achieving the expected Level 4 result at Key Stage 2 in Maths and English rose one per cent year on year to reach 74 per cent, with significant gains in the number of children attaining this grade in writing.
Schools minister Nick Gibb pointed out that it is still disappointing to see one in three children struggling to master the three Rs, while fewer youngsters are excelling and too many are leaving primary school at learning levels expected of a seven year old or younger.
However, he stressed: "The fact that more children are reaching the expected level in every subject is very welcome as is the significant increase in the proportion of children achieving well in writing."
School exclusion statistics published by the government showed nearly 900 pupils were suspended each school day for abuse or assault.
