Venezuelan minister suggests Unasur literacy programme

August 3, 2011

Improving literacy levels, perhaps by providing books for young readers, has been highlighted by Venezuela's foreign minister Nicolas Maduro as an area that the Union of South American Nations (Unasur) could focus on.

He called for a strengthening of Unasur and said each council should work together to make changes, suggesting that joint policies could be the way forward, reports Andina.

"We can propose in the social field a great South American literacy plan, and another that involves strengthening the health system in the region," Mr Maduro stated.

He suggested that Unasur should play a greater role in formulating "concrete actions to improve education" in its member countries.

Street children are among those who are most in need of schemes to provide them with books for young readers.

According to statistics compiled by the Consortium for Street Children, half of the children on the streets of Peru's capital Lima had abandoned their schooling before leaving home.
