Victims of drug killing revealed as young bloggers

September 20, 2011

A pair of young bloggers are the latest victims in Mexico's drug war and violent gang culture.

Their bodies were found at a bridge in the border town Nuevo Laredo with a series of messages indicating the victims were targeted due to their blogging on the activities of Mexico's notorious drug cartels, CNN reports.

While national media often fails to report incidences of violence in Mexico due to threats, the pair had been identified by the cartels as people behind social network activity highlighting gang crimes and killings.

According to Ana Maria Salazar, a security analyst in Mexico City and a former Pentagon official, the killings raised questions about how the gangs identified them.

"Are the cartels that sophisticated that they can track down people who are tweeting anonymously? Are they following these accounts? Do they have a specialised unit following social networks?" she asked.

Earlier this month, the violence targeted education institutions and schoolchildren specifically, with 140 schools in the coastal city of Acapulco forced to shut their doors due to threats of kidnap and extortion from local drug gangs.
